A whole lot of Zombie draft cure planning.

Hey guys, Jon here.

Belle posted earlier a thread directed towards all medics/healers as a unified effort to work on a cure and prevent the spread of the disease. Since then, her, I, and a bunch of other people have come together to work on a sort of game plan for synthesizing the cure for the disease. I'd love for as many people to get in on this as possible, especially if that person plans on being infected, or is a medic working to combat the cure.

Update: All plot up until and including the proto-cure has been approved, however some special "conditions" will need to be met in order for the true cure to be made. We don't know what those conditions are yet, everything after the proto-cure will remain a lose skeleton structure until we have that information.

Once the infection begins on the 26th two teams will be organized. One team, presently composed of Daisy-023, Alia Shepard, Mordin Solus and Luke Skywalker will be clearing out and locking down the hospital. Mordin will be using the materials within to begin working on the cure. A second team (with no members as of writing) will work on securing the barracks to serve as a secondary base, should the hospital fall.

By the 28th, Mordin will have synthesized a vaccine that will slow the spread of the infection. It will be unable to outright prevent it, so precautions should still be taken. It will also have no effect on people already zombified, though those who are simply infected should be able to keep their sanity for at least a little while longer. This vaccine will be distributed during the evacuation, so even those going home have some medicine to make sure the disease does not spread to Luceti.

By the 29th a proto-cure will by created. This is directed at those already infected, and is delivered by a shot to the back of the skull. It will return higher cognitive function to the brain, but will not reverse the zombification process. As such, those treated with the proto-cure will be human brains trapped in a zombie body. This may be helpful, since the increased strength and speed, plus immunity to further infection will be invaluable on the battlefield, at least until the power cap comes into effect.

*With this, Mordin and company will be presented with a moral dilemma. Do they distribute the proto-cure as the cure, and use the new half-zombie allies in holding back the horde, or do they pour all of their effort into creating a true cure? This is going to be an active discussion with those within the hospital, including those subjects within who are already treated with the proto-cure (which we already have two volunteers, and would love to have more!) Anyone infected who would like to take the proto-cure are more than welcome to, but should be mentally fortified enough to handle the nightmare fuel of being stuck in a zombified state.

This same day, when news breaks of the Lone Survivor, volunteers from both the Hospital and Barracks teams will form a party in order to secure him and return him to the hospital (or barracks if the hospital is overrun). From there, the Lone Survivor will be treated as if he were a zombie, since it seems he may be the source of the outbreak.

On the 30th, Mordin (and any doctors who are helping him at this point) will work to separate antibodies from the survivor's blood. Should he also be the source, extra work will have to be taken in order to remove any of the disease-spreading pathogens. Once combined with the proto-cure, and given extra work, a full cure should be able to be processed. Then, should the survivor prove to be the source of the disease, he will be executed to prevent further spreading.

The full cure will then be presented on the 31st, just before the entire village is blown to hell. Then we can all go home happy, safe, and a bit more mentally disturbed.

For those of you who are friends with me on Plurk, I also have a discussion thread going on there right now. If you're not, I'd love you if you added me. We'd love to have more input on all this and make it work for everyone's plans.

If anyone else would like to be a part of this, especially being a part of the Barracks Team, the Rescue Team, or an infected volunteer, please let me know!

I can tentatively say I'd be interested in the Barracks or Rescue team for Loki, but part of that depends on where the few people he actually cares about are at the time. (eg: He will be much more interested in being on the rescue team if someone he likes is infected. Or would be willing to help clean out the barracks if Obi-wan is involved in that. Etc. Otherwise he'll just be all pissed off and wanting to blow things up.)

Barracks Medical Team

[personal profile] fleurdesel 2012-10-22 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So Mordin and Co can focus on just the cure and not the rest of the regular blokes not infected and just bleeding all over the place, Adele will put forth the motion to move the wounded to the Barracks after it's cleaned out and set up there. Infected wounded will be directed to the Hospital, uninfected to the Barracks.

It'll keep tainted blood from getting on uninfected people, work as a means of quarantine, and give Mordin and co room to focus on just the cure.

Suddenly hard to choose barracks or hospital. Oh so hard. Will probably stick to being on the cure team if it isn't established somewhere already, though.

Cure team's sticking it out at the hospital, Mordin will be better able to do his work with the supplies and facilities there, I think. Adele's used to improvising in hospital situations so she won't be out of sorts making a surgical wing in the barracks.
frost_jewel: (assured)

In that case she will get a "call if you need anything fast" note from this mage.

Well, Adele's brosis will be happy to act as a watchdog for this. Medicine she can't do, but it gives her the chance to make sure Adele's alright.

You can put down Michael Blanc ([personal profile] sapphire_sniper) for both the hospital clearing team and the Survivor search team!

I... may be considering having him get infected after the completion of the proto-cure too. Also, adding you on plurk, just keep an eye open for Mad_Alric!

Hey, sorry for the lateness, but I was hoping to have Michel work on clearing the hospital, not the barracks!

And I think I'm gonna pass on getting him infected and half-cured after all. Still have a lot on my plate over the next few days, so one less plot point to worry about is probably for the best.
wise_maiden: (there is something curious about this)

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2012-10-22 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, I'm very late! All I have to offer currently are some spells that can help relieve some of the symptoms (probably recover or the higher-concentrated purify), which will have fair to middling results considering what has been said of normal healing magic and stop seeming effective fairly early on.

Her other spell that she will eventually start attempting (once its clear the others aren't very effective), resurrection, will at first seem "as though it's succeeded but the virus has just gone into remission for another 12 hours. Ultimately, the infection is reset. This CAN help extend someone's chances to last longer until a real cure is made, but it also has the possibility of being less and less effective every time."

So there's some room to test and play around with that. I think she'd realize that it's not a guaranteed cure-all and that the others should continue to look for a more permanent cure in the meanwhile, but if people wanted to be eventually cured and not killed by the deadline there's an option to play with there before the power cap comes into play.

That said I'm not certain where to put her exclusively, since she'll probably at first be on the go, but I'm guessing she'd eventually end up being asked to hang around the barracks or hospital before the evac goes out?
wise_maiden: (there is something curious about this)

[personal profile] wise_maiden 2012-10-24 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Field work might suit her best depending on how the coordinating is going (maybe interacting with people before they're sent off to a specific area, though there are a few, I think, who'd get temp-cured up to a point, like Yuan and Vivi?). She's capable of medical work without her magic as well, so she might end up at the barracks toward the end if she's not exhausted first. In which case someone can make sure she gets out of there.

[personal profile] geniustheveil 2012-10-22 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ami should be listed on cure as well - she'll be infected quite late in the game, as I understand it. And she'd definitely be putting her medical efforts to best use here. She shines with this sort of thing.

As I said on the thread Adele's mun posted, Leonhardt is willing to volunteer to be a research subject after he's infected on the 28th. He'll be able to keep symptoms at bay until the power cap increases with his own natural ability because he's basically something rather weird.

He also has some experience with some medical related stuff and can explain some of how he is likely staving it off to help them with their research.

Since the power cap will turn off what is keeping it at bay, my plan is to have him escape once symptoms do start showing so he doesn't infect the medical folks.
eyesofstrength: (035)

[personal profile] eyesofstrength 2012-10-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and very possible as long as he still has cognitive functions. He's a master at stealth, so he'll definitely be able to pull it off and will claim it is for their safety. Sadly, he'll be among those who die as long as I can think up a penalty.
eyesofstrength: (052)

[personal profile] eyesofstrength 2012-10-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Not an issue for a man who has a death wish. But hey, they'll have about 24 hours with which to study someone who is infected and not showing any symptoms of such. That likely will give some valuable information for a proto-cure.
ahappylie: (Thinking)

[personal profile] ahappylie 2012-10-22 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Souji would volunteer for one of the teams - likely the Barracks Clearing and Fortification (since it'll be after his friends are infected possibly). He's a close quarters swordsman and one of the best Japan had to offer during the Bakumatsu so he might be useful there.
ahappylie: (Or so I heard~)

[personal profile] ahappylie 2012-10-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha yeah, but he has some practice with blood borne diseases. 8D; He'll be alright.

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2012-10-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Rydia can be an infected 'volunteer', sometime around the 28/29th. Until then, she will be available as a healer (healing magic only, no extensive medical knowledge).
most_unwanted: (panic face)

[personal profile] most_unwanted 2012-10-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I definitely am tempted by this proto-cure thing and its nightmarish results. Which is why I'll volunteer Mulder for that! I wasn't 100% sure on what I'd do with him up to seeing this, but really what's even better than chasing around zombies? Getting to be one.
removeimpurity: (You're not serious?)

o/

Volunteering Syre here has another for the Hospital C+F Team and the Hospital Cure Team until her departure on the night of the 29th (as previously mentioned on the draft post itself).

She will be more than willing to deal with any of the really dirty work, research-wise, and will be leaving a copy of all of her notes when she heads out to be evac'd; she is also proficient with a bladed weapon, so in the event of having to decapitate zombified assailants at the hospital, she'll be more than ready to help defend if need be.

I can volunteer Sabriel for the Barrack Clearing duty up until the morning of the 29th. At that point she has her breakdown thanks to one of the Glitchers and will have to be evacuated back to Luceti due to mental trauma. I do not plan for her to get infected, and even if her magic gets taken away she's a solid sword fighter.

Okay, I've got a question re: the immune survivor person.

Say he does prove to be a "source of disease" instead of just somebody with the right antibodies or whatever. Why kill him instead of also-vaccinate-him?
frost_jewel: (hm?)

[personal profile] frost_jewel 2012-10-24 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sneaky NPCs, the Malnosso are. You never know what they'll want from us.

One argument to be made then is that if one vaccinates everyone else (eventually, granted), that his death is also unnecessary. If we end up with a cure, the enclosure does not explode - hopefully - and the resources to produce enough of it for everyone should no longer be an issue, with the attack-and-disease combo threat over.

Maybe we don't know this yet: is the survivor someone who lives in Vaskoth?

There's also the implication that with the cure, they will (potentially) just be producing a number of other Patient Zeros: immune but carriers.
